Frost-proof garden standpipe - running water even in winter

A burst water pipe caused by frost costs time and money. Replacement, including dismantling and reinstallation, means increased expenditure. In some cases, consequential damage cannot be ruled out, for example if a pipe bursts in an outside tap inside a wall. You can significantly reduce this risk with a frost-proof garden standpipe. Whether cemetery, garden, park or campsite - the water supply remains secure even in winter without having to worry about expensive frost damage.

The challenges

Freezing water expands. If it is in a water pipe, it can cause it to burst. This is why conventional pipes and taps in outdoor areas must be made frost-proof before the onset of winter. Two problems arise here: Firstly, the right time to shut off the taps and drain the supply pipes is often missed. Secondly, it is not possible to operate the outdoor tap during the cold season. The frost-proof garden standpipe offers you a suitable solution in both respects for cemeteries, (allotment) gardens, parks, stables, camping and sports grounds, playgrounds, private use and other areas of application.

Frost-proof external wall valves have been available for some time, where the shut-off takes place in frost-protected indoor areas. However, these are not suitable if you want to install an outside tap away from an outside wall or if you want to use an existing vertical water inlet outdoors. In addition, horizontal installation is not possible in all buildings. You can install the frost-proof garden standpipe anywhere outside, regardless of the interior, and thus ensure the water supply throughout the winter. All you need for the installation is a supply pipe at a frost-proof depth (recommendation min. 80 cm). Additional components such as hydrants or caps are not required.

The solution

The frost-proof tap works in a simple way. After each water withdrawal, the tap is automatically emptied via a drainage system. All you need to do is switch the garden standpipe to "Closed" as far as it will go. Drainage is easy to implement even in clayey, impermeable soil by creating a sufficiently large gravel bed in the area of the drain to accommodate the drainage water. Hygiene is also taken care of, as there is no standing water in the pipe due to the emptying process. This could lead to increased growth of germs such as legionella or other pathogens, especially at higher temperatures in summer. The reduced risk of contamination means that recontamination is virtually impossible. In addition, the backflow preventer used in the water inlet ensures that no contaminated water gets back into the drinking water installation.

Every area of application has different requirements. To meet these requirements, the BEULCO garden standpipe is designed so that you can adjust the height and length of the water outlet as required. Various jet regulators allow individual adjustment of the water jet and flow rate. Ceramic discs enable wear-free operation, while high-quality materials such as stainless steel (housing pipe), brass (housing parts in the ground), chrome-plated brass (housing parts in the tapping area) and chrome-plated die-cast zinc (handle) ensure a long service life.

Conclusion

With the frost-proof garden standpipe, unpleasant and expensive frost damage to outdoor pipes and the associated taps can be avoided. Elaborate frost protection measures before the onset of winter are no longer necessary. All you need to do is empty the water in the standpipe into the frost-free area. You do not need to shut off or dismantle the pipe. This reduces the overall maintenance effort. There are also fewer hygiene concerns, as the risk of germs forming in the pipe is reduced. As long as the supply pipe is below the frost line, you can use this technology to operate outdoor water outlets throughout the winter and thus ensure the water supply in a wide range of applications.
